When Kevin Owens made his main roster debut five years he immediately went at John Cena. Many fans remember the first matchup between the two which KO, who was NXT champion at the time, went over on Cena, a US champ, in a non-title match. These two would have far better match at the following PPV and its largely forgotten.
The setting is WWE Money in the Bank. In the rematch Cena put US title on the line against Owens, who is still NXT champion. A big match feel with the crowd split in half. The match told a story in the ring. You have Kevin Owens riding high from his victory against Cena at Elimination Chamber. He is salivating at chance making it 2-0 against him this time for US title. He is arrogantly pumped up and ready for fight at the ring of the bell. You have John Cena who underestimated Owens in his first match that he took the time to study opponent. The result is him opening up his wrestling movelist performing moves he never done before such as electric chair faceslam and sunset flip powerbomb. Owens took a page out of Cena's playbook hitting five knuckle shuffle in mocking disrespect. They study each other so well that they would counter each other moves especially with Owens countering superplex with his own in a twisting fashion. Both would show their frustrations as they couldn't put each other away especially Cena who hit his finisher on Owens twice. A near botch corner stunner (moment some fans only remember about the match) follow with third Attitude Adjustment to put Owens away for good with Cena exorcising his demons on getting a victory over him. Post match have Cena and Owens shake hands only for Owens to obliterate him with a powerbomb on the apron setting up Cena vs Owens III which was weaker match of the trilogy.
This match is where everything both did in the ring made freakin' sense from the moves, counters, and the emotions as both men threw everything at each other in entire match. John Cena lived up to "Big Match John" name while Kevin Owens lived up being a prize fighter. Of all WWE matches in 2015 I have this as top match of 2015. This match deserves more accolades and is slightly above their first match due the storytelling. This match was indeed underrated classic.
Match of the Week: Kintaro Kanemura vs Hayabusa (FMW 8/11/01)
When I got into FMW I was introduce to the exploits of man with many first names in wrestling. He went through Ricky, W*ING, and Yukihiro before settling on Kintaro. What remains the same is his humor in the ring and putting his body through 25 years of hardcore wrestling style. He's calling it a career embarking on retirement tour with his last match scheduled in December. There so many highlights of his career some good, some bad, and few that might have ended his career. He survived and continue on being the unofficial king of Japanese indies. One of his highlights is his match against the late Hayabusa.
In FMW storyline, battle for ownership stakes on the line with Hayabusa putting up his 5% of his stock and WEW World title in 2-out-3 falls team matches on this show against the late Kodo Fuyuki team. On Hayabusa team is him, Tetsuhiro Kuroda, and Biomonster DNA while team Fuyuki consist of Mr. Gannosuke and Kanemura alongside with him. Series tied 1-1 with this being deciding match. In attendance of the show and commentary is Stuart Levy of US-based Tokyo Pop. He's part of the group trying win Hayabusa 5% to become majority owner of FMW.
Kanemura brawling style getting the best of Hayabusa outside the ring. Hayabusa goes on a rise countering Kanemura's offense and set ups putting him through a table with a frankensteiner Kanemura had set up. He dealt with interference from long tine rival Mr. Gannosuke and Mammoth Sasaki who chokeslammed him while warring factions fought outside the ring. End came when Hayabusa went for his trademark Stardust Press, but missed allowing Kanemura to hit three thunder fire bombs to the take WEW World title and Hayabusa 5% of the company making Tokyo Pop as majority owner and Yoshida as FMW president.
FMW would close six months later. Kanemura continued on throughout Japanese feds with shots at Zero One and Big Japan Wrestling and running shows under Apache Army name. He survived bad injuries and scandal that have threaten his career. His continued on til his body can't take no more. Outside the brawler is fun-loving goof who enjoys performing in the ring. Going to miss the guy and his Team No Respect dance.
Match of the Week: Masato Tanaka vs Balls Mahoney (ECW Hardcore TV #271)
1998 is the year then FMW wrestler Masato Tanaka made his US debut in ECW. This is his second appearance in ECW and first at the famed ECW Arena going against Balls Mahoney in front of wild, bloodthirsty crowd.
He made quick impression out wrestling Balls early on then went toe-to-toe in a brawl outside. Once they got back in the ring both had chair battle trading sick chair shots on each other and still got up to roar of ECW crowd. Balls tries go for Nutcracker Suite on to the chairs, but Tanaka turns it to tornado DDT on to the chairs for the win. He won ECW Arena crowd for his skills and toughness.
It's first of many battles these two had. Both teamed up a bit later in the year winning ECW tag team titles from Dudleyz. He returned in another stint ECW in late 1999 holding world heavyweight title. Known for his toughness,Tanaka continue blaze a career in Japan with FMW then Zero 1 and various Japanese feds.
Balls Mahoney stayed with ECW til it closed and worked around northeast including short stint in TNA. Wrestled in WWE with the ill-fated ECW revival brand. He passed away this year.
Match of the Week: Athena vs Su Yung (ACW Distrust, Dismay & Antisocial Behavior 2015)
Pika-Su vs Charthena
Nintendo released PokemonGO app earlier this week and immediately became a big hit. So big that it got people socializing, talking, and in some cases, get shot or falling to their deaths while chasing Pokemon in public using their phone and not looking in their way.
What does this do with wrestling? How about match featuring Pokemon battle? Say what? What in creative minds would do such a thing? Creativity belongs to women wrestlers Athena and Su Yung.
Last year in Anarchy Championship Wrestling, Athena defeated Su Yung to win ACW Joshi title after spending half of 2014 chasing her. Their second battle happened at Queen of Queens when they faced other in semifinals with Athena coming on top and on her way to winning the tournament and retaining Joshi title. Two months later at this show, they faced each other in third and final match between the two. Billed as final showdown these two took creativity off the charts.
Match started with bad blood with slaps then submission holds and the original ref taking a beating as well. Both got outside the ring when anarchy happened as the locker room emptied out and brawled. After the brawl both came out under the ring dressed in Pokemon kigu with Su Yung dressed as Pikachu and Athena as Charmander. They battled to Pokemon theme and Su Yung using yellow streamers as thunderbolt on Athena. Another interference when Angel Blue appeared cutting off strand of Athena's hair. Jessica James makes the save attacking Angel Blue til one of Blue's henchmen VG Allin put stop to it. During this time both Athena and Su Yung went under the ring. Baby Dumplins came out and help Jessica James ward off attack from Angel Blue and VG Allin chasing them out to the back. Athena and Su Yung re-emerge this time as DC Comics women with Su Yung as Catwoman and Athena as Supergirl. Both went on having hard hitting straight wrestling match battling in and out of the ring. Su Yung had Athena in armbar/headscissors submission which she got out. Athena hook STF variation on Su Yung making her tap to win the final battle.
In Athena post match speech she talked how both came up with creative touch on this match. After thanking everyone she dropped a bombshell this is her last match thus vacating ACW joshi title. Reason? She signed development deal with NXT. Amazing way go out in a fed she called home for years.
This year at Wrestlemania weekend I end up running into Su Yung and talked about the match. I wish I mention about their Queen of Queens match because I enjoy that as well. I wish she appeared down here again.
There you have it. Two women wrestlers Athena and Su Yung use their creativity featuring Pokemon and DC Comics women making this match fun and memorable to this fan.
Match of the Week: Outsiders vs Sting/Randy Savage/Lex Luger (WCW Bash at the Beach 1996)
The day Hulkamania died and New World Order arrived
The match and turn that changed the wrestling world and made WCW no. 1 for almost two years. It started when Scott Hall and Kevin Nash declared war on WCW. They took it further when Kevin Nash powerbombed Eric Bischoff through a table. They follow it up assaulting Arn Anderson, American Males, and Rey Misterio who got thrown face first on to production truck. Then this match at main event of Bash at the Beach where it was three-on-three encounter. Going to show Outsiders have not said who's the third member.
Started as two-on-three encounter with Hall and Nash dominating Team WCW with Luger getting taken out early in the match. Sting and Savage fought valiantly, but Hall and Nash kept overpowering them. Hulk Hogan showed up thought to save WCW from Hall and Nash. Instead Hogan hits the legdrop heard around the world aligning himself with Hall and Nash in one of biggest shocks in wrestling. After over decade and half being hero to the fans now Hogan turned to the other side becoming a heel. Soon ring litter with debris and trash at the three. Cut from from all showings is a fan attempting get in the ring only get stomped out. Hogan cuts a blistering heel promo with Tony Schiavone ending the show with the words, "Hulk Hogan you can go to hell!"
This is a big deal. When started watching I grew up cheering for Hulk Hogan. I was a Hulkamaniac. To see him turn heel shocked the hell out of me. Not because it came out of nowhere he's the guy that told all his Hulkamaniacs to say their prayers, take their vitamins, and never go wrong. Witness him tell the fans to shut up and stick it becoming a prima donna was all brand new to fans that grew up around 80s and early 90s. New World Order sent WCW to new heights making big money and dominating over WWF during that short period.
Match of the Week: CM Punk vs John Cena (WWE Money in the Bank 2011)
Five years ago, CM Punk gave the pipe bomb heard around the world thus kickstarting WWE version "Summer of Punk" storyline leading to this match against John Cena for WWE World Heavyweight title. Outside the ring Punk's contract was coming up and set to expire after Money in the Bank. There been talks of him not going to re-sign with WWE after the show. After he gave his infamous pipe bomb shoot promo he became most talked about wrestler with wrestlers, fans, and the media. With realism of his contract status up in the air gave main event of Money in the Bank huge buzz which was held in his hometown of Chicago. During the build he proclaim himself as "The Voice of the Voiceless." Vince McMahon threaten to fire John Cena if he does not beat Punk making it high stakes. Cena fighting for the company. Punk fighting for himself and the voices of the voiceless.
Big question mark is what's going to happen at the match. Will they straight up wrestle for clean finish? DQ finish? Be another screwjob finish? Bunch of crazy possibilities going into the match.
In the match these two put on 40 minute clinic trying out beat each other for the WWE World Heavyweight title. The loud rabid Chicago crowd fully backing their hometown guy and booing John Cena over each move they performed. The commentary was golden as they talk about possible impact if Punk wins. Vince McMahon sent John Laurenitis to screw CM Punk, but John Cena would not let it happen. Punk hits Cena with Go 2 Sleep for the win and WWE World Heavyweight title. Soon Vince sic Alberto del Rio on Punk only to eat a kick to the head. Punk escaped to the wild hometown crowd celebrating.
Behind the scenes Punk did re-sign with WWE on day of the show, but Summer of Punk storyline continued. He posted a picture of WWE World Heavyweight title in his fridge then crashing Wizard World panel that was hosted by Triple H. The angle and storyline fizzled out going into Summerslam. The months, June and July of 2011, produced one hell of entertaining RAW moment and great match at Money in the Bank.
Match of the Week: Steiners vs Sting/Lex Luger (WCW Superbrawl 1991)
Twenty-five years this dream match happen. This is during time face vs face matches were rare. You have face of WCW and former WCW World Heavweight champion Sting, United States champion Lex Luger and WCW tag team champions Rick and Scott Steiner. All four are top faces of the company. You put all four whom are friends in a match for tag team titles. Before the match a damn good video building up the match that is one better ones WCW produced. All four buddies have
intense friendly battle hitting power move after power move for over 10 minutes of action. Also showed why to have Sting as your buddy saving Lex Luger from Nikita Koloff taking a chain shot from him. Wish he would cut some loose after getting backstabbed so many times.
Match of the Week: Super Dragon/Excalibur vs Rising Son/Taro (XPW Redemption 2001)
It was this match that expanded my horizon into world of SoCal wrestling. I could go on long rant strange state of wrestling in 2001. Maybe I should do that in later time. Some ramblings before the match.....
There was two well known feds in SoCal at the time. One was UPW, whom once had WWE development deal producing John Cena, Samoa Joe, and Miz. The other was XPW, who earn not so sterling reputation being ECW ripoff and still stinging from backlash of incident at Heatwave 2000 PPV. I still gave them a chance. If it wasn't for that chance I would not have seen this match and explore other parts of SoCal feds. I bought copy of XPW Redemption at Sam Goodys which has since long closed down. I popped this tape on VHS and this was the first match. I looked at the back of cover and it wasn't advertised.
As for the match they went balls to the wall for 10 minutes in a style I never before. It was mix of high flying and stiff strong style wrestling beating the crap out of each other. It was later I found out this style was called hybrid. They were performing revolutionary moves not seen in the states throughout the match. 619? Rising Son did it before Rey Misterio. Cradle implant DDT? Seen cradle DDT but never in implant form. Super Dragon hitting various high flying moves such as corkscrew splash. Excalibur show off a tiger driver in the match. Pyschodriver? Never seen anyone did it before Super Dragon and he did two variations in the match. The crowd? They started off negative and these four won them over once the match ended.
This match got me dig more deeper into SoCal wrestling indy scene. What I saw was a revolutionary hybrid style that set SoCal wrestling
apart from everyone else. It was quick fast and hard hitting way
different than what I have seen at the time. A search of the wrestlers landed me to Revolution Pro, a fed run by wrestler and trainer American Wild Child. RevPro, in turn, was precursor to Pro Wrestling Guerilla as some of wrestlers created the fed started out in RevPro. It lead me to site called SoCal Uncensored,
a site dedicated to SoCal indy wrestling. Importance of RevPro wrestlers showing up at XPW help jump start to rise of SoCal indy scene. It got me into the scene.
The post match:
- they were given five minutes in the ring but all four decide go into overtime. Three of four never got invited back while Super Dragon would have one more match in XPW.
- Revolution Pro closed up shop in 2004.
- Super Dragon and Excalibur along four others form Pro Wrestling Guerilla in 2003
- Super Dragon became top guy all of SoCal wrestling. Forced to retire from injuries he would returned years later teaming with Davey Richards til injury hit him again.
- Super Dragon/TARO had killer match at Bart Kapitze Alternative Wrestling Show in mask vs mask match which Super Dragon won
- Rising Son wrestled til injuries caught up to him in 2004. He returned for few matches in 2010. He passed away last year.
Match of the Week: Megumi Kudo vs Combat Toyoda (FMW 5/5/96)
May 5 in Japanese wrestling is unofficially "FMW Day" as the company hosted big shows on this date. They don't care what day it lands on there be a show on that date. Twenty years ago this match stole the show as two women, Megumi Kudo and Combat Toyoda, battle each other in no rope explosive barbwire match. All four sides covered in barbwire while two sides contains electric explosions when touched. A retiring Combat Toyoda head into the match as FMW and WWA women champion hoping leave as champion like Atsushi Onita did on 5/5/95 show. Challenger Megumi Kudo is the face of FMW women division looking add title win no. 5.
These two told story of lifetime as these two put on a wrestling match in middle of a Japanese deathmatch as they out-wrestle and out-power each other while being surrounded by elements of barbwire. When either one landed on exploding barbwire it made Atsushi Onita looking like nervous wreck. These two women gave their heart and spirit out in this entire match caused Onita to break down after the match.
If you thought the matches Bayley, Sasha Banks, Charlotte, and Becky Lynch had in NXT was revolutionary Megumi Kudo and Combat Toyoda were 20 years way ahead of them and pushed the envelope with this amazing brutal match.
Toyoda remain retired til she came back for few one-off matches few years later. Last known match for small FMW revival brand in 2008. Kudo would retire the following year and stay out of ring competition entire time. During that time she broke many of joshi fans hearts when she married Hido.
Match of the Week: Steve Austin vs Rock (Backlash 99)
This match is one forgotten gems they had together. In my opinion, this match is far superior than their Wrestlemania 15 encounter. Going into the match the following happened:
- while Rock got his rematch, Steve Austin wanted his custom smoking skull world heavyweight belt back
- McMahons stacked the odds against Austin with Shane McMahon as referee of the match. Stipulations tacked on if Austin touched him he would be DQ'd and lose the belt
- Vince and Shane McMahon now at each other throats over power
- Rock and Austin battle on the bridge which Rock threw Austin over and into the river along with the "title"
- turns out Rock didn't toss smoking skull belt. He was wearing it and held mock funeral for the belt. Austin gained revenge steamrolling Rock's car. Both fought which Austin sent Rock down to the grave. Shane McMahon bashed Austin from behind with a shovel and is left as the last visual of holding smoking skull belt high in the air over Austin and Rock going to the show.
- before the show started match is made into no holds barred.
At least Austin and Rock made sense while McMahons feuding bit confusing. Then again its Russo style booking.
As for the match both took no hold barred rule seriously at they brawled and tore everything down in their path from fencing, equipment, and announce tables. One of my favorite visual moments when Rock got hold of camera mocking Austin only eat a stunner on top of announce table. The overbooking kicked in trying screw Austin few times. Vince would enter the foray sending one of Hebners as referee of the match and KO'ing Shane with a belt. Steve Austin gave Rock another stunner then a belt shot to retain the title and is shown holding both winged and smoking skull belt at same time.
Another wild fun brawl between the two and would get to pinnacle of it few years later.
The next night on RAW Rock would turn full blown face again leaving The
Corporation while Steve Austin save Stephanie McMahon from clutches of
The Undertaker whom he kidnapped at end of Backlash.
Back after hiatus and had great Wrestlemania weekend. I watch another classic Shane McMahon bump, this time, live when he went for elbow drop on The Undertaker from top of Hell in the Cell and ended up crashing through announce table. Throughout the years when Shane gets in the ring to battle he found a ways to get on highlight reel with his crazy stunt spots. One of his infamous matches is the crazy match against Kurt Angle at 2001 WWE King of the Ring.
The picture said it all. Both battle each other in the street fight brutally beating each other the entire match. The famous spot was Angle suplexing Shane multiple times on the plexiglass trying get it to break. Post match causality left Angle with broken tailbone and Shane lucky to be alive after nearly killing himself landing on his head when the glass didn't break.
At the end you give Shane McMahon props and respect for willing put his body on the line each and every time for the dangerous spot he perform,
Match of the Week: Daniel Bryan vs Jack Swagger/Cesaro/Ryback (WWE RAW 7/22/13)
Last week Daniel Bryan announced his retirement as years of in-ring punishment finally caught up to him. I was fortunate to watch him live in person few times. One of the times was this live RAW I attended. This was build to Summerslam which then champion John Cena handpicked Bryan as his opponent. On this night they had contract signing and Daniel Bryan got booked in a gauntlet match against three wrestlers to showcase he truly belong on WWE PPV main event. I called this RAW moment "30 Minutes with Daniel Bryan" because he wrestled 30 minutes or more on main event of RAW. Think about it and put this in mind. They put Daniel Bryan to wrestle on RAW main event for more than 30 minutes minutes. Before this match the last time I remember RAW given lot of time to wrestler(s) in a match was Shawn Michaels and John Cena in near hour battle.
This entry feature the photos I took of this match. His first match was against Jack Swagger who vanquished him in three minutes with a Yes Lock. His second opponent is Swagger's partner Antonio Cesaro as they had hard-hitting back and forth match with Bryan winning after countering Cesaro's Swiss Miss into inside cradle. TV timing have it for almost 15 minutes. Match was good on TV, but far superior live in person. Being there live I can tell this match of the year candidate while the two commercial breaks took it away. His last opponent was Ryback who bullied and dominated a tired Bryan in the match. Bryan made small comeback only get knocked back down. Ryback set up a table outside the ring only get met with flying Daniel Bryan. It started another comeback ending with Bryan putting Yes Lock on Ryback which he used the ropes to break it. He went for one too many high risk move as Ryback catches and counter with powerbomb on the floor. He powerbombed him again this time through a table resulting DQ and victory to Daniel Bryan. The match reached around 10 minutes. In the post match John Cena saved Daniel Bryan beating Ryback up. At the end of the gauntlet Daniel Bryan lasted more than 30 minutes.
You think that was end of this? Wrong! This post RAW dark match featured John Cena taking Mark Henry. The Shield came out attacking both wrestlers with Daniel Bryan making the save. The match turn into six men tag with John Cena, Mark Henry, and Daniel Bryan taking on The Shield which ended in a DQ. On that night he wrestled in four matches in likely total of 40-45 minutes.
There are moments you have to be there. This is one of those moments. Thank you Daniel Bryan!
Match of the Week: Christian vs Chris Jericho (Wrestlemania 20)
It started with $1 Canadian bet between best friends on who can nail one of hottest woman wrestler. Turns out to be a mistake when one started develop feelings for her thinking its more deep than friends. His best friend try snap him out of it saying she's not interested. His best friend is also saying she got an eye on someone which is him. This led to split between friends duking it out for her affections at Wrestlemania. The potential love interest wander down cheering on the one who is love sick for her. Got involved only get thrown to the corner. When the one smitten with love checked on her she inadvertently elbowed him into a rollup and loss to his former best friend. She consoled him only slap him few times and went to his "best friend" side with a kiss to remember. At the end the asshole get the girl while nice guys finish last. Love hurts.
Match of the Week: Mankind vs Rock (WWE Halftime Heat)
So its halftime of the Super Bowl. Are you bored of the lame entertainment featuring lousy singers, awful bands, and stupid celebrities of the show? Here's a perfect way to kill off that boring halftime show. Turn off your TV and watch this match featuring Mankind trying win back WWE World Heavyweight title from the Rock in empty arena match. Don't worry missing beginning of the second half of Super Bowl. The match is perfectly timed breeze through entire halftime show. Take it from me. I been watching this match over and over during halftime for past 16 years.
Match of the Week: Sandman vs D-Von Dudley (ECW Crossing the Line Again 97; shown on ECW Hardcore TV #198)
Prepare for trouble make it double
Several big things happen at this show. Paul Heyman announce ECW first PPV Barely Legal is back on. Another thing happen was the post match of this. Sandman doing his long 2-3 minute entrance when D-Von Dudley attacked him before the bell using the singapore cane. Sandman fought back in a brawl and squashed him in five minute match. After the match Joel Gertner announced D-Von as the "winner" only get caned. D-Von attacks Sandman afterward bringing out Bubba Ray and Spike Dudley whom they been feuding with D-Von for over half a year previously. Bubba Ray smacks a chair on Sandman then gave him, Spike and the Gangstas a beat down. No longer a comedic team both are now team of serious ass kickers. On that night Dudley Boyz unite to form one of most dominating tag teams in world of wrestling pillaging through ECW, WWE, TNA, Japan, and the indies for almost two decades.
Match of the Week: Ric Flair vs Sting (WCW Clash of Champions I)
The match that made Sting a main eventer. I remember watching this match when WCW showed it on WCW All Nighter in mid-90s. For those wondering WCW did special middle of night/early morning program called WCW All Nighter (or something to similar name) showing past WCW matches for several hours. I think they ran it twice.
WCW hosted Clash of Champions on same night of Wrestlemania 4 PPV and put the event free of charge to TV viewers on TBS. The match schedule with 45 minute time limit with three judges deciding the match if it went to time limit. Ric Flair was NWA World Heavyweight champion heading to the event. His manager J.J. Dillon locked up in the cage before the match as Sting goes for the big prize. For 45 minutes Sting proved he can main event. He fought like machine, bounced back like a machine, and battled his way like a machine against Flair with the crowd eating every moment of it. The match ended to judge's decision of a draw after time limit expired.
After the night a new hero born to the fans becoming face of World Championship Wrestling to the day it closed down. Along with it is his record of multiple WCW World Heavyweight championships along with runs with U.S. and tag team titles. He never jumped to WWE during Monday Night Wars even after it closed down. Took 14 years after WCW close down for him appear on WWE. He's now WWE Hall of Fame class of 2016.

Match of the Week: Rob Van Dam vs Jerry Lynn (ECW Guilty as Charged 2001)
Final showdown in the final match of final ECW PPV
On January 7 marks the 15th anniversary of final ECW PPV ever produced
with RVD and Jerry Lynn ending the show.
Going to the PPV its obvious company is its last legs with wrestlers owed money and checks getting bounced. It resulted Rob Van Dam leaving. Shows getting cancelled. Paul Heyman stop showing up at events. Now they have no TV show and fewer shows in between PPV heading to this event.
ECW promise a big surprise on the show. Jerry Lynn pretty much gave it away on Rob Van Dam being at there when he said he's not here and will only wrestle in main events. Other surprises include Nova turning to Heavy Metal Nova. Appareance of Missy Hyatt who was Justin Credible pre-match sex partner. Rhino destroyed Balls Mahoney, Chilly Willy, Johnny Swinger, Simon Diamond, Blue Meanie, Jasmine St. Claire and Dawn Marie. He would later appeared after Sandman won ECW World Heavyweight title goring him and taking the belt with him. This brought out the surprise Rob Van Dam. Jerry Lynn entered and both have a match. The match wasn't the best as their previous PPV encounters but its still decent. RVD did his spots while Lynn did his part to wild crowd which at times forgot about the match.
